The Mental Health Capability Program · 6 months

Do your best work in mental health, and keep doing it for years

Six months of learning modules, monthly group coaching live with Lauren, and live group sessions from 30 October to December, with new learning added regularly. For health and disability professionals who want practical, evidence-based strategies that work, without it costing them their energy, their wellbeing and time with the people they love.

Let me guess…

A risk conversation lands in front of you, and afterwards you replay it, wondering whether you said the right thing.

The people you support need ongoing, complex mental health work, and it is sitting on top of an already full role.

You wake at 4am thinking about work, and switching off at the end of the day takes longer than it used to.

You were hired for physical health, housing, teaching, support coordination or leadership, and yet so much of it is mental health.

Things you used to manage comfortably now take everything you have got.

You still love the work, but there is less energy and vitality left for the people you love.

None of this means you are in the wrong job. It means you are carrying mental health complexity without a framework built for it, and without ongoing support to keep growing in it.

Now imagine six months from now…

  • You walk into a hard conversation knowing what to say, what to ask and when to bring someone else in.
  • The people you support get better outcomes, because you can read what is really going on underneath.
  • You feel ready to lead, supervise and guide others, and your career reflects it.
  • You finish the day and actually switch off, with energy left for life and the people you love.
  • You still enjoy this work, and you can see yourself doing it for years.

The method

The Mental Health Capability Framework

Three pillars, built from 18 years in clinical mental health and leadership.

01 · FOUNDATION

What to look for, and why someone is struggling

Spot the early signs, recognise common presentations like anxiety, depression and trauma, understand why this person is struggling right now, know when to refer, and write it up clearly.

02 · IN THE ROOM

What to say and do, from everyday sessions to a crisis

Evidence-based strategies for everyday sessions, plus a step by step approach for when someone is distressed, thinking about suicide or in crisis: how to start, what to ask, what to say and what to do next.

03 · SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE

Switch off after work and build a long career

A simple plan for switching off, early warning signs the job is taking too much, and routines that protect your energy, plus the longevity to keep growing, take on leadership and build your reputation.

Is this for you?

This is for you if…

  • You are a health or disability professional, educator, team leader or founder
  • Mental health shows up in your work, whether or not it is in your job title
  • You want structure and support, not another one-off course
  • You want to grow into leadership or supervision
  • You want to keep loving this work for years

It is probably not for you if…

  • You are looking for crisis support for yourself right now. Please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14
  • You want an accredited qualification. For that, Mental Health First Aid may suit you better
  • You are not ready to bring real situations from your own work
Lauren Pattinson

Your guide

Hi, I'm Lauren.

I'm an endorsed mental health occupational therapist and an accredited Mental Health First Aid instructor, with 18 years in clinical mental health across private hospitals, inpatient and community mental health, homelessness, and drug and alcohol services.

I founded Allay Occupational Therapy and lead its team of 25 clinicians. I've trained teams at Cotton On, The Salvation Army and Avalon Airport, and 100% of participants would recommend the training.

I built this Program because I know what it is like to hold people, risk, a team and a business at the same time, and I've lived the burnout side of this work myself.

What people say about working with Lauren

"Felt cared for and safe talking about tough subjects and felt valued when contributing to conversation"

"Lauren was great from the first enquiry. We were wanting to develop knowledge and skills in mental health for a sporting club, but this doesn't fit into most available services. Lauren tailored a session to suit our needs, was easy to work with in preparation, and on the night delivered an engaging session. Lots of learnings and healthy discussions throughout the night to make it relevant for us. Once again thanks so much for all of your effort and sharing your knowledge with us."
